Buffalo Recent Bookings

Buffalo recent bookings flow through the Erie County correctional system, which serves New York's second-largest city. The Buffalo Police Department handles most arrests within city limits, and people taken into custody are booked at the Erie County Holding Center in downtown Buffalo. Erie County also operates a separate correctional facility in Alden for sentenced inmates. The city has its own FOIL portal for requesting police records, and the Erie County Sheriff's Office maintains the inmate roster and booking information. Buffalo is the county seat of Erie County, so the main courthouse and sheriff's office are all right in the city.

City of Buffalo FOIL portal for requesting police records and recent bookings information

For police records specifically, the BPD has its own FOIL section linked from the main portal. The Accident/Records Division is at the City Public Safety Building, 185 Exchange Blvd, Buffalo. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Copies of accident reports cost $0.25 per page for involved parties. Anyone else needs to file a FOIL request. All body-worn camera footage requests also go through the department's FOIL Officer.

Under Public Officers Law Section 89, agencies must acknowledge FOIL requests within five business days. They can provide the records, deny with a written reason, or give you an estimated date for completion. If denied, you have 30 days to appeal. Standard copy fees are $0.25 per page statewide.

Erie County Sheriff's Office and Buffalo Booking Records

The Erie County Sheriff's Office maintains booking records for everyone processed through the county's two facilities. The daily inmate roster is one of the more transparent tools in western New York for checking on recent bookings. It includes names, dates of birth, facility locations, and booking dates for all current inmates. This roster gets updated regularly as new bookings come in and people are released or transferred.

For historical booking records or detailed arrest information, file a FOIL request with the sheriff's office at 10 Delaware Avenue, Buffalo, NY 14202. Include as much detail as possible: the person's full name, date of birth, approximate arrest date, and what specific records you need. The more precise your request, the faster the turnaround. Booking records typically include the person's identifying information, charges, bail amount, arresting agency, and facility assignment.

Arrest records from Buffalo Police and booking records from the Erie County Sheriff are kept by different agencies. If you need the police report from the arrest itself, that goes through BPD or the city FOIL portal. If you need jail intake records, custody information, or release details, that goes through the sheriff. Both are public records under New York's Freedom of Information Law, with the usual exceptions for sealed records, juvenile records, and medical information.

Under New York Correction Law Section 500-c, the Erie County Sheriff is responsible for keeping accurate records of every person committed to custody. The booking process at the Erie County Holding Center includes identity confirmation, photographs, and a medical and mental health screening. The ECHC has a capacity of 638 inmates, while the Alden facility holds up to 746. The sheriff's office also runs a secure detention area at Erie County Medical Center on Grider Street in Buffalo for inmates who need hospital care. In recent years, the sheriff's office has been moving from paper records to electronic systems using Radio Frequency Identification technology, which should make future record lookups faster and more reliable.
